- Do I need to install an app?
No. Propina is designed as a pure web app (PWA) that runs in your browser on your computer or phone. This means neither your customers nor you need to install anything. Your customers can pay in just a few clicks via Apple Pay, Google Pay, SEPA, or PayPal without having to register with propina.
However, you can save propina like a desktop or mobile app and enjoy behavior similar to a native app.- Do I need a new payment terminal?
No. Propina runs in your customers' phone browsers and is independent of your payment infrastructure. Tips go directly to your employees' accounts. No hardware, no terminal, and you can cancel anytime.
- Will my customers see my contact details?
No. With propina, you don't share any personal data. Neither your email address nor your phone number – nor your bank details. On your tip page and in the payment receipt, your customers only see your public name, which you can choose freely.
- How secure is propina?
All sensitive data is stored encrypted. Additionally, we offer you the option to secure your account with two-factor authentication (2FA). A withdrawal is then only possible after entering a one-time code (OTP).
- What do I need to do to get started?
Simply create a new account with propina. After entering a username, email, and password, you only need to confirm your email address – and you're ready to go. Your profile then needs a nice photo and a public name – that's it.
- How do customers find my tip page?
Your customers access your page via smartphone using a QR code or NFC chip. Each page – whether individual or team page – receives a short link. This short link can be downloaded as a QR code and printed yourself, or ordered as high-quality POS material. NFC chips in key chains or pads on the counter can also be programmed with this link.
- Tips are already a big gesture – I don't want my customers to feel pressured to pay fees.
We understand that the question of covering transaction fees can be perceived as annoying – or it may even trigger guilt if customers don't cover them. Therefore, you have the option in your profile to hide the fee option entirely. In this case, you agree to cover the fees yourself. But you can decide this yourself and change it at any time.
- Do I need to pay taxes on tips?
In Germany, tips are tax-free according to § 3 No. 51 EStG if they are given voluntarily and in addition to wages by a third party (guest) to employees. There is no upper limit. Voluntary tips for service staff are free from income tax and social security contributions. However: Tips for freelancers (e.g., taxi operators) are business income and must be taxed. It's best to ask your tax advisor how to handle this in your case.
